My Inspiration

Hi, Clayton here, just thought I’d let you know a little bit more about me, so here goes. I am a life long lover of video games. Receiving an NES and Super Mario Bros 3 way back in 1990 was all it took. I was immediately enraptured in the magical world of the Mushroom Kingdom. This led me to Zelda, Metroid, Metal Gear, Pokemon and countless other adventures. For 24 years, video games were a way for me to relax, bond with friends or to escape.

Then in the winter of 2012, I asked myself a question that has changed my life. I was 2 weeks away from meeting my first niece or nephew. One night I lay awake imagining who this person would grow up to be. I envisioned myself with her, but who was I in this dream? Who would the Clayton she grew up knowing be? Would I be someone she was proud of, someone she looked up to? Immediately I knew that if this reverie were to become reality, my life would have to change.

The following day I went to my computer and began to research where I could learn to become a video game designer. If I was going to become someone that my niece or nephew would be proud of, I would have to be excited about what I was doing. The only answer was video games. I would funnel the fervent energy I reserved for playing games into skills that would allow me to create them. Within a week I had enrolled in the Art Institute of Vancouver’s Game Art and Design Program.

Now, as the winter of 2014 comes to an end and I am graduating from The Art Institute, my source of inspiration is beginning to understand who I am and I am becoming the person I want her to know.
